INFORMATION ABOUT US
**JCSC does our best to provide our swimmers with the highest level of training possible. We try to schedule our practices so that they are convenient for all swim families. Below are a list of our practices that we offer during the summer season along with the explanations and requirements for each. If you have any questions about any practice, please feel free to ask a coach! Off Season(September-May) Practice GroupsTo better serve the swimmers; JCSC has created swim practice groups. Each group has been created with the swimmer in mind. Our goal is to provide the swimmers with comfortable lane/pool space, more individualized instruction, and well rounded training groups. We think that this is a great way to describe this practice for many reasons. Our goal is to create a practice that pushes swimmers to a new level of training. We will be swimming large amounts of yardage, leading intense dry land training (including multiple mile runs, abs, stretch cords, etc.), requiring 75% attendance per week(4 out of 5 practices), and expecting 110% effort from each swimmer. This practice is designed for the older swimmers( 13 and up), but if there is a younger(12 and under) swimmer who is interested in attending then they will be given a test set that will mirror what a normal set will be at the 6am practice. There will be no tolerance of lateness or absence unless there is a justified cause. Swimmers will also be required to keep a swimmer log that tracks their yardage, sets, and dry land along with coach feedback and swimmer reflections.Time: 8:15am-9:30amLocation: Carson Newman College PoolGroup: 10 and Under**This practice is designed for the 10 and under swimmers. Our focus for this practice is to continue to teach our swimmers all four strokes and how to swim them in a race. We will focus on techniques to help them improve their previous knowledge of strokes. We will also teach dives, starts, and individual medley turns.Time: 8:30am-10:00amLocation: Jefferson City Outdoor PoolGroup: 11 and up**Our focus of this practice is to work on improving swimmer endurance, teaching more detailed stroke technique, and making each stroke more efficient. We will focus on starts, turns, and finishes as well.Summer Afternoon PracticesDry landTime: 4:30-5:00PMLocation: Outdoor PoolGroup:11 and Ups** During dry land, we will be doing stretching, abs, calisthenics, running, and other forms of dry land training.SwimTime: 5:00-6:30PMLocation: Outdoor PoolGroup: 11 and Ups**Our focus of this practice is to work on improving swimmer endurance, teaching more detailed stroke technique, and making each stroke more efficient. David Cooper Head Coach
David Cooper is approaching his third season as the head coach and fourth season as a coach of the Jefferson City Swim Club.PRIOR TO JCSC Coach David has a lot of experience coaching swimming in the East Tennessee area. He was the assistant coach at the Morristown Country Club from 2000 to 2001 before becoming the head coach from 2002 to 2006. Coach David was also the assistant coach for the Morristown West and East high school swim teams from 2004 to 2006. David is currently the head coach for the Jefferson County high school swim team, as well.BACKGROUNDDavid started swimming at the age of 6. Swimming is a family tradition. After the passing of Title IV both his Aunt and Mother were the first in the state of Michigan to swim and score points for the Grand Ledge Boys High School Varsity Swim Team. It wasnt until two years later the High School offered a girls swim team. His uncle swam for Eastern MI University. Coach David swam on the Morristown Boys and Girls Club team for two years before joining JCSC. David and his sister, Kim were members of JCSC for 6 years. When David entered high school, he decided to take his swimming career one step further and joined Pilot Aquatic Club of Knoxville. At PACK, David had the privilege of swimming under Head Coach Gardner Howland for four years. He also had the opportunity to be a part of a team that trained 2000 Olympic gold medalist Julia Stowers and 2004 Olympic Trial finalist, Davis Tarwater. During college, David was on the University of Tennessees Mens Water polo team.FUN FACTSFavorite Stroke/s: Individual Medley Favorite Swim Memory: Breaking the Smoky Mountain Record for 13-14 50 back under Head Coach Andra HutchinsFavorite Food: HibachiFavorite Song: ACDC-TNTPERSONAL MISSION STATEMENTFirst and foremost, I LOVE COACHING. I want to pass down my love of the sport to others. It is something that, not only my family participated in together while I was young, but it is also something my parents did growing up. When a swimmer of mine runs up to their parents and asks, "Did I beat your times, Mom/Dad?", it reminds me exactly of myself, and I know that is something everyone will remember for a life time. I do it for the masochistic side of the sport- the early mornings that are harder than anything else you have ever done. When you get older you dont know how you did all of it, but it makes everything you do from there on out easier. I coach for the smiles, frustration, anger, and for the feeling of everything paying off in the end. I do it because it is more than just swimming. It is a life changing experience.

Swim Meets "Do not let what you cannot do, interfere with what you can do." John Wooden
Summer Swim Meets Assistant Head Coach
Why do we have Swim Meets?
Competitive swim meets help to teach the SWIMMERS good sportsmanship and discipline while helping to develop their athleticism and competitiveness. These characteristics combined together result in TEAM SPIRIT; working together for a common goal. Parental support through active participation in the Barracuda's meets and events helps to reinforce those life skills that the swimmmers are learning.

Scheduling/Cancellations/Inclement Weather
We will run on the Hamblen County snow schedule for the FIRST day of snow. For subsequent days, please check this website and/or with the Head Coach. Whenever you are in doubt about a practice, please check the team website. Schedule changes will be posted here whenever possible to get them up in a timely manner. If a swimmer does not have internet access, they may call the Head Coach.
Summer Weather Policy
Summer thunderstorms always stop swimming. Be Aware! Be Safe!
The rules we follow are these:
1. When thunder is first heard or lightning is first seen, the pool, deck and fences are cleared of all swimmers.
2. Swimmers and others in the pool area must stand under the pavilion, in the JCSC shed, or in other buildings.
3. Swimmers may re-enter the water 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard.
Because summer storms may be widely scattered, strict policies about work-out cancellations cannot be established. If you think that there is a possibility that a work-out may be cancelled check this website's homepage. If possible, a cancellation will be posted. If the cancellation is called too late, there will be no way to post it. Swimmers and parents need to take responsibility for checking when weather conditions are questionable. Cancellations are posted ASAP on the homepage whenever possible to get them up in a timely manner. If a swimmer does not have internet access, they may call the Head Coach. On stormy days, parents should be aware that their swimmers may have to picked up early. Please be prepared to do that.
For swim meets- we always attempt to host/attend the meet. The weather may change or be different for meets that are away. If there are any questions please refer to the website or call the Head Coach. Please do not leave a swim meet until the head coach directs you to do so!
If there is any debate assume that there is no practice. We do not want anybody getting hurt on the way to or from swim practice. Inexperienced high school drivers are at an extreme risk. Any swimmer or parent can call the Head Coach with questions or for information. We are not able to call each swimmer when there are changes in the schedule due to weather. Swimmers without internet access will need to call the Head Coach if they have any doubt that the weather could cause a scheduled workout to be cancelled.

Our tent location is should be beside the baby pool located near the big slide. We will not know for sure where it is until Friday after it is set up. I will make sure that we send an email out letting you know where to find JCSC!
Every swimmer is required to come talk to the coaches under the coach tent(located on the pool deck) after every race. The coaches stay in one location during this meet. We have special forms and feedback that we give to our swimmers so it is important that they come visit us.

If you did NOT work at Smoky, we would like you to work at City.
We will NOT be having team parents either day. Our tent will be in the same vincinity which is very close to the clerk of course tent where the swimmers will be seated before swimming and near the door the swimmers will exit after their events. Families will be expected to get their swimmer to the seating area.
GKAISA Greater Knoxville Area Interclub Swimming Association (GKAISA)
Each team has its own page with current results. Look up meet rules, City Meet results, pool lengths, record times, scoring rules, etc.
Scoring at a dual meet:
Individual Relay
1st place 5 points 7 points
2nd place 3 points 3 points
3rd place 2 points 0 point
4th place 1 point
5th place 0 point
6th place 0 point
In individual events, only two swimmers per team may score. For example: If three swimmers from our team finish in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, the 3rd place swimmer would be moved to the 5th scoring place so that the opposing team would earn points for the 3rd and 4th finishes. Similarly only one relay per team may score in each event. Place ribbons are awarded based on the actual order of finish with the swimmers times recorded on them.
In a dual meet, no swimmer may swim in more than 4 events for points. A swimmer may swim in more than 4 events if the additional events are designated as "exhibition".

Nutrition Tips
What is Swimmer's Ear?
Swimmer's Ear (External Otitis)
An inflammation of the skin lining the outer ear canal. It occurs most often after swimming or bathing when water becomes trapped in the ear, providing an excellent environment for bacteria growth. Within hours, symptoms of itching, pain, and discharge may occur. The skin thickens making the ear canal narrower. The human ear needs wax (cerumen) to protect against Swimmer's Ear. Ear wax is nature's way of protecting the skin by waterproofing and providing an acid pH mantle to inhibit growth of microorganisms.
How do I prevent it?
Ear Drop Recipe
Mix equal portions of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. (Vinegar contains acetic acid, which kills bacteria and fungi. Isopropyl Alcohol absorbs the water, helps dry out the ear, and may even kill the bacteria and fungi that cause swimmer's ear). Put 3-4 drops in each ear immediately after leaving the water every time you swim. (These drops help prevent swimmer's ear. If, even after using these drops after every practice, you contract swimmer's ear, see your doctor immediately to obtain the proper drops to cure the condition).
What should I eat the day before a meet?
*Lots of carbohydrate loaded foods such as pasta and bread.
* Drinks lots of water and gatorade/powerade.
What should I eat on the day of a meet?
* You should stay out of the sun, stay AWAY from carbonated beverages, and continue to load up on carbs, gatorade, and water.
What should parents or swimmers pack for half day meets and all day events?
*Chairs
*Food
*Books/Games
*Change of clothes
*Camera
*Sunscreen
*Extra Towels
*Extra swim suits, caps and goggels(just in case! )
